Professional Objective:
Te serve as a principal in a dynamic international school where everyone is learning.
I love students. I love teachers. I love international schools. I love learning. I am passionate about developing my skills as a leader with the goal of serving in vibrant learning communities.
I get excited when kids are enthusiastic about their learning. Curriculum and technology can make this easier, but the real key to deep learning is an inspiring teacher who has a great learner-centered toolbox for addressing the unique needs of every learner in the class. Learning happens best in community, and everyone in a school community is a learner. Our best remembrances of learning are not about what we learned, but who we learned from and with. Learning is vital for everyone in a school: students, teachers, parents, and school leaders.
I have been blessed to work in a few great international schools with many fantastic educators. I spent 3 years in Tanzania at the International School of Tanganyika. I spent two years in Trinidad at the International School of Port-of-Spain. I am now in my 11th year at Seoul Foreign School in Korea.
SFS has been a great place to work and grow. I began at the school as a 7th grade Science and Math teacher then became the Middle School Technology Coordinator. When the school created a full time Assistant Principal position, I was able to move into that role. I enjoyed teaching, but I am happier in the role of an administrator. I feel called to pursue other positions in school leadership. I try to be a servant leader by establishing vision for the future and empowering others in my learning community. I bring strong technology, communication, and problem solving skills. I have the ability to see the big picture and discern the relevant details. My colleagues find me personable and helpful. I try to ask good questions that help me learn how to serve others in my learning community.
I have recently completed a doctorate in Educational Leadership. The dissertation concerned the transitions that teachers go through as they shift to teaching in a one-to-one laptop environment. As part of my program, I completed a 360-hour Educational Leadership internship. I am hold teaching and administrator certification in the state of Washington, USA.
I grew up in the U.S. but am from an international family. My mom’s parents were missionaries in Africa for over 40 years. My dad’s parents were missionaries in China, the Philippines, and Bahrain. I still have aunts, uncles, and cousins scattered across the globe outside of the U.S. It seems pretty normal for me to be living abroad.
My wife, Lonna, and I met in Seoul and were married in 2006. We have a son, Graham, who was born in 2010, and a daughter, Eleanor, who was born in 2012. We look forward to raising them overseas so that they can have a broader perspective on the world and how they can personally serve others. Our home in the U.S. is Michigan, where we have extended family and a house.
Life is short. I am eager to make a difference in a forward-thinking school where I can make meaningful and important improvements for the sake of students. I am equally committed to finding a great community where my family will thrive. If you think your school is a place I could fit, then let's talk!
